One of the Must Sees in Montgomery is the Legacy museum and Memorial. Both new additions to the city and part of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) . A very sombre but impressive memorial for the lynchings that occurred and the museum had some excellent videos and information on slavery. They had collected soil samples from locations where lynchings occurred and collected them in jars and displayed them in the museum. At the memorial, they had 8000 monuments with the names of the lynching victims listed by county. It was grim but powerful.
We drove over the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma The have a decent visitor's center which was worth stopping for. It felt chilling to be there. Actually, there were many chilling moments on this trip like where Rosa Parks was arrested, or the church where Martin Luther King used to preach, etc..
Listening to the Christian channel on the drive to New Orleans was quite interesting. There are discussions on abortion , transgenders, climate change. All the discussions are one sided with everyone with the same viewpoint. Fetus is a human being. The fetus is a separate entity from the woman so therefore she should not have a choice in aborting the baby. Climate change is happening but not as fast as the democrats say it is. Transgenders are like someone with bulimia.. they just need therapy to go back to their original gender. I could have listened to this for hours but Prasad made me change the channel. And the faith is so strong.. it's brought up in every ad but I guess that makes sense as it is a Christian channel.
In New Orleans, we stayed at the Troubadour Hotel. Park across the street, it's cheaper than valet. We spent a few hours at the WWII museum, it's a great museum, avoid the train at the beginning, waste of time and they also charge $7 for the movie which I think is overrated. The exhibits and all the related short movies are worth seeing. It is 90degrees outside, we needed to do something indoors and it was a good refresher for me.
You don't need a car in New Orleans, if we were to do it again, we would have returned our rental and uber'ed it everywhere. The parking costs are too high and it's not easy to find parking in the city. We ended up using Uber anyway.
We did another Segway tour - Nation Tours in New Orleans. The tour guide was not as good as the one in Montgomery but I definitely had to maneuver the Segway far more deftly and handle more slopes, bumpy roads, narrow alley ways and far more traffic. I'm glad we did the tour in Montgomery as it was a good beginner lesson. We saw far more than we would seen of the French Quarter had we walked. We took the Haunted tour at 6pm which was a great idea as it was not hot and sunny and the breeze while riding the Segways was just what we needed. We definitely recommend a tour in New Orleans - either Segway , bike tour or a walking tour. Segways are a hit with the teenagers!
That evening we found at a Vegetarian friendly restaurant - Carmo . It was ok, I wouldn't go back again. It is generally not easy to find good vegetarian food at any corner in the French quarter so we did some research before. We dropped off Rushil at the hotel and Prasad and I checked out Frenchman St in the French Quarter and had a great time at a Blues/Country bar with live music. We paid $10 cover which was definitely worth it since all the other places were so crowded.
The next day we tried another Vegetarian place called Seed. This place is about 2 miles from the French Quarter but definitely worth checking out for lunch. The food was delicious and we even had beignets for dessert!
